READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div>Grabbed this one on a whim because of the title. Having finally sat down to read it though, the title makes perfect sense. This story takes place on an island. An island that is essentially a junkyard of people who are no longer wanted by society. In this case, it's women who are no longer fertile. I mean it's not that far fetched. Society for years has looked at infertile women as less than human. Hell, fertile women are viewed as less than human birthing machines by many still today. I mean, with Row vs Wade overturned, the US government legally said "you're potential to make new life is more important than your life". I'm sitting here having Handmaid's Tale flashbacks. </div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway our story starts with Jay, a woman in her 30s who is left on the island and immediately attacked by elderly women. She luckily however, is saved by a large, strong woman and thus the story truly begins to unveil itself to the reader. </div><div><br /></div><div>Going to say right now that I really enjoy the style of the art in this book. I'm wholly unfamiliar with everyone involved in this book. After a quick search of social media I found that Lauren Knight previously had done some beautiful work for the CHOSEN ONES series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Truth be told her style reminds me somewhat of Vanesa Del Rey in character design, although her actual illustrations are much more minimalist in comparison. I highly suggest following her on Instagram. I have included some social media links below. Writer Chrissy Williams has previously been awarded Telegraph Best Books of The Year for her book BEAR.</div><div><br /></div><div>This is an interesting story concept and pretty timely considering the climate of the United States right now. I really enjoy seeing senior women portrayed as formidable and self sufficient. Our society always portrays seniors as invalids. Not to mention that television and film have a long history of limiting the kind of roles that women of a certain age, usually 30, can have. I should say also that it's not JUST senior women are sent to this island. It's women who are no longer fertile, but this just happens to be mostly senior women, or near senior. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/194NDt4zWcE" width="320" youtube-src-id="194NDt4zWcE"></iframe></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Creators' Social Media:</div><div><a href="https://twitter.com/chrissywilliams">https://twitter.com/chrissywilliams</a></div><div><a href="https://twitter.com/OG_lalalalauren">https://twitter.com/OG_lalalalauren</a></div><div><a href="https://www.instagram.com/lalalalabia/">https://www.instagram.com/lalalalabia/</a></div>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-66889117744622505932022-07-12T05:40:00.001-07:002022-07-12T05:40:17.692-07:00There's Something Wrong With Patrick Todd #1<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmIy7yoRqUNO0zBLHveJ7GcdBw27_NCT1Go1gA4lrZWAvH5xokmXO8EqTsSiK2hFntByT0bdFwmLsq4T3jCPTv1i6IEMEAa7m2WpYXzCFEk0mNpD_iOYUVavDznd-jgPm_m8Ss7S7OdnQiXS7h0qML3NDiaaVVp_XzEB8g2ilJErrtiRaOcdrgl6hLyA/s930/Patrick%20Todd%201.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="930" data-original-width="605" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmIy7yoRqUNO0zBLHveJ7GcdBw27_NCT1Go1gA4lrZWAvH5xokmXO8EqTsSiK2hFntByT0bdFwmLsq4T3jCPTv1i6IEMEAa7m2WpYXzCFEk0mNpD_iOYUVavDznd-jgPm_m8Ss7S7OdnQiXS7h0qML3NDiaaVVp_XzEB8g2ilJErrtiRaOcdrgl6hLyA/s320/Patrick%20Todd%201.jpg" width="208" /></a></div><br />Written by Ed Brisson<br />Art by Gavin Guidry<br />Published by Aftershock Comics<div>Released July 6th 2022<br /><div><br /></div><div><i>Warning: This article contains story spoilers for the first issue. Read at your own risk</i></div><div><br /></div><div>What a great cover right?! Yes, I still really do judge books by their cover pretty often and this is because it's the artwork that pulls me in, not just the subject matter projected by that artwork. With comics however, you gotta open that book up if you like the cover art cause of course, the covers are often done by different artists than the interior. If you're the fashionable artist of the year or exceptionally in high demand, you can make an entire career off of just doing cover art. Fortunately for us and this particular book, the cover artist is also the artist for the story. I can't say I'm familiar with Gavin Guidry's previous works (<i>Going to the Chapel, The Death Defying, Rebel, Medidata</i> and some <i>TMNT</i>). They are all stories I have yet to read but I can say that based on what I saw in this book, I'd really like to check those out. </div><div><br /></div><div>Writer Ed Brisson who's work I am very familiar with. I've talked about his work in past videos and articles (Famous for a slew of marvel books most notably <i>Old Man Logan </i>& <i>Dead Man Logan</i>, <i>Dawn of X </i>and some great creator owned books like <i>Sheltered</i>). This particular story takes place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, coincidentally the city we both reside in. I was thrilled to see actual Halifax locations in the pages of this comic. The downtown police station looking exactly as it looks here. The QEII Hospital and even an old hotel out in Bedford, which is another part of what we call the HRM, the Halifax Regional Municipality. And hey there's even a Tim Hortons in this book cause pre-covid, it really felt like there was one on every corner. There practically is. </div><div><br /></div><div>Of course, admiring the likeness of my own environment on paper, doesn't tell you what the story is about. Truthfully, from the set up of this particular book, all I can surmise is that this is about super powers... and murder & crime. It wouldn't be fun if the story didn't hold some decapitations and crime. I think we're all much more fond of super power stories that have some grit and gore. I know I am. I read less and less Marvel comics lately as so many of them are just a bit too squeaky clean for my terribly corrupted and corruptible brain. </div><div><br /></div><div>This first issue is great. I can honestly say I have zero criticisms or problems with it. It sets up the story properly. We know that something odd is afoot. We find out that our protagonist Patrick Todd is basically using other people to steal money in order to take care of his infirm mother. We find out that someone has it out for him although we don't know who! There's just enough mystery to leave us wanting. We're introduced to our antagonist Detective Anderson (some matrix nod there?) who comes across as a fine dude who's just trying to solve some crime. All in all, this story feels a bit like an anti-hero story as the people Patrick chooses to commit his money-driven crimes, happen to be criminals themselves. We're not entire sure how Patrick knows this though. He's choosing to use bad people as his tools to rob banks so in his mind he's doing a little public service. Vigilantism is frowned on by the law so that makes the story more fun, I mean who doesn't love a good vigilante story?! All in all, really good set-up for the series. </div><div><br /></div><div>Something else fun about this first issue is that there's a little embellishment at the end of the issue where we see some police reports and medical reports which all talk about real places in Halifax. This adds a feeling of authenticity to the story that I really like. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FqM5zjHam-E" width="320" youtube-src-id="FqM5zjHam-E"></iframe></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-9328639119501035862022-07-08T09:45:00.000-07:002022-07-08T09:45:07.089-07:00The Me You Love In The Dark<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEr2jXDSayeOIC5AEyQcVJtLnzYeFtaP6_04FoLgX2m28bjjV7E2c5G1CHXwzxHrDs4VO7HLjtS_mETUZycWzK9Z16i36uOPzj-kL2DdaoXW2sraO8f26ZuIXBoO6kdixrNQlekuuTYLNxluVpyDXWgM7n92DDDxUM005_xz_XAkrQSMBNFzY-1F6Jrw/s591/the-me-you-love-in-the-dark-tp_dd89faa50a.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="591" data-original-width="384" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEr2jXDSayeOIC5AEyQcVJtLnzYeFtaP6_04FoLgX2m28bjjV7E2c5G1CHXwzxHrDs4VO7HLjtS_mETUZycWzK9Z16i36uOPzj-kL2DdaoXW2sraO8f26ZuIXBoO6kdixrNQlekuuTYLNxluVpyDXWgM7n92DDDxUM005_xz_XAkrQSMBNFzY-1F6Jrw/s320/the-me-you-love-in-the-dark-tp_dd89faa50a.jpg" width="208" /></a></div><br /><br /><br /><p></p><p>Published by Image Comics<br />Writer: Skottie Young<br />Artist: Jorge Corona</p><p><br />My reason for grabbing this book at all however was not based on my love of stories about artists but instead for my love of paranormal stories. The fact that I'm an artist experiencing a large period of creative block illustration-wise, is a bit of a coincidence in terms of reading something I can related to. Of course, the fact that Skottie Young was writing something a bit darker and more adult was another reason for me grabbing this book, not to forget that fact that I love the art of Jorge Corona. So long-time fan of both these creators and of the collaborations they have been putting out together the past couple years. </p><p>Yes, I realize I'm a bit late to this book. The trade came out in March 2022 and serialized in the previous year. But hey, better late than pregnant, especially if you live the United States. This story follows artist Ro who moves into an old house in a rural location in order to find some inspiration for a new set of paintings. The house she moves into is well-known to be haunted. I'm going to try my best not to spoil the story but my motto for my reviews from now on happens to be : read at your own risk.</p><p>I feel like this story is more about the dark and trapped emotions associated with creative blocks rather than anything paranormal. Particularly as an artist, the struggle to come up with something new and different while also tapping into your deeper self, is a relatable struggle. Hmm I'm kinda reading other stories with this "writers block" sort of trope, that is also mixed with elements of the paranormal.. i.e. Brian Azarello & Maria Llovett's <i> Faithless</i>. </p><p>I think it's a fairly obvious that pairing creativity with the paranormal is a good match because the idea that artistic talent and/or creativity come from the gods or other paranormal beings, is not a new one. It has been a prevalent theme throughout history. The ancient Greeks for example, often talked about this in mythology. The Muses and various gods dedicated to bestowing innovation, creativity and artistic talent on random mortals have many stories of this nature. Further to this, the idea that artistic innovation itself comes from a dark part of your soul or psyche, the old trope of the suffering, brooding artist, for instance; the very idea that creative talent comes from a place of darkness and some dark force rather than something benevolent is also not a new concept but seen in puritan cultures. </p><p>This story feels like an exploration of creativity rather than a general haunting story. In fact, it isn't really a haunting story at all. The interactions Ro has with the being in her house is actually for much of the story, a very comfy one. She gains great friendship and inspiration from the spirit at first. It wouldn't be much of a story however if that were the end of it. Spoiler alert, the spirit isn't really all that nice. It's at this point that the story really becomes less paranormal again and feels more like the story of a battered woman. The red flags start to unfurl themselves before disaster falls. When this story takes a turn to domestic abuse, we see Skottie talking about how you can't force creativity and that when you do, progress is stalled. This happens multiple times. </p><p>There are a lot of other great themes running through this story, like the dangers of isolation when in a new relationship, the pressures of creating under a deadline, self confidence, imposter syndrome, abusive domestic relationships in general, and so many more things...</p><p>In conclusion, I really like this story. It carries so much more deeper themes and meaning than simply serving as another haunted house story. The ideas and themes is explore are all adult however so I wouldn't recommend this for anyone under 14 or 15 but that's really a parents judgement call there. </p><p><br /></p><p>Watch my review of this comic in Youtube: </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XzhvBC22Vas" width="320" youtube-src-id="XzhvBC22Vas"></iframe></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-68698004080563624082022-07-07T03:33:00.001-07:002022-07-07T03:33:11.979-07:00What I'm currently reading: July 2022<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qAfQZFjOfqA" width="320" youtube-src-id="qAfQZFjOfqA"></iframe></div><br /><p></p>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-58477358873757336702022-04-12T04:13:00.004-07:002022-04-12T04:13:43.384-07:00A Town Called Terror by Steve Niles & Szymon Kudranski<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU6kN-ftQTjlDx7WIMxADLnG6xHOfKOVHwDjnzgofyr7eMtPP34uO97pPkAzJ_w5i8_HSCi6szPjpoc3VB9-p0Y2ubWGV5m2L18OFQUpADRBfMGvZ4PJApzQ7PDduzY8ITBG-sl8syy1o8DWImg3M2Ws2iR2agOCn3scthaiiLtRDQRPbMwi9FlCLuJw/s900/a-town-called-terror-1_e5b5ed2e15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="585" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU6kN-ftQTjlDx7WIMxADLnG6xHOfKOVHwDjnzgofyr7eMtPP34uO97pPkAzJ_w5i8_HSCi6szPjpoc3VB9-p0Y2ubWGV5m2L18OFQUpADRBfMGvZ4PJApzQ7PDduzY8ITBG-sl8syy1o8DWImg3M2Ws2iR2agOCn3scthaiiLtRDQRPbMwi9FlCLuJw/s320/a-town-called-terror-1_e5b5ed2e15.jpg" width="208" /></a></div><br />Written by Steve Niles<p></p><p>Illustrated by <a href="https://imagecomics.com/creators/szymon-kudranski">Szymon Kudranski</a></p><p>Published by Image Comics</p><p><br /></p><p>Amazing way to start a comic book. I have to say that I immediately got into the mood for horror. The tone and atmosphere were perfectly crafted into existence with the first 3 pages. I write to you now, all my thoughts as I climb through this new horror story by one of the comic book world's best horror writers- Steve Niles. Have you written about necromancers here?! The first few pages portray a type of post-mortem surgery, an autopsy in reverse. A surgery putting a corpse back together. I am getting serious necromancer vibes and I love it!</p><p>Like many good horror comics, color on these panels are used minimally with the book consisting largely of haunting black and white . It is quite fitting for what is literally a town called Terror, population 1300, home to freaks and monsters. Our story centers around a man named Henry who grew up in Terror, driven away by in-laws and locals, unfortunately finds himself back there to deal with a family matter, against his will. </p><p>This is the first time I've read a book illustrated by Szymon. If you're a Spawn fan however, you would have seen his work on a few modern issues as well as Nita Hawe's Nightmare Blog Vol 1. Szymon is going to be blow up. Or haven't you noticed that this happens to pretty much every artist who works with Niles? Maybe keep your eye trained on Szymon and their trained hand! Horror seems to come naturally to Szymon and there are several pages that are particularly compelling in this first issue. Several sequential panels that flow with second by second movement just like pictures on a film reel. It is on these pages that I found myself taking the first few steps into the emotions of these new characters. That's when I realize, I'm hooked. When the artist can suck me in that way, showing me exactly how a character feels, that's when I feel that connection. The story becomes real to me. Now I need more. </p><p>If you haven't already ordered this story which I am certain will become a horror treasure, you should go call up your local comic book shop and get it added to your subscription box pronto! You do not want to miss this one! This time they brought us a horror inspired story about the last children on planet Earth who also happen to be starving vampires. LITTLE MONSTERS. Oh if you're around my age, you're probably reminded of the Fred Savage movie from '89 staring Howie Mandel. Ya I barely remember the plot of this movie. It was not one of my favorites as a child (is there any wonder?). No, this title doesn't seem to have anything to do with that one. Thankfully.</p><p>What we have here is an introductory issue that quietly presents each of the last living children to the reader. Lemire and Nguyen have perfected the atmosphere of this post-apocalyptic world with these near expressionless characters. You feel every bit of their ruined environment through the black and white panels. I should say, nearly completely black and white. Like so many great books before (some Frank Miller comes to mind), Nguyen uses reds as an impact effect to draw the readers eye to important parts of a panel. Blood never looks so impactful in black and white of course but he also uses the red to underline the names of the children as we meet them, among other things. </p><p>Through this debut issue, we get to see a little about of the humanity as well as the brutality that has been left behind in these eternal children. There's a beautiful moment revealed between 2 of the older children, Yui and Lucas. In this moment is revealed the nature of their day to day like as well as how they had to adjust to their new environment. Their eternal life in a dead world, it is obvious from this conversation that time is meaningless. It got me thinking what most people would do if time was meaningless to how our lives eb and flow. The day to day life of the monsters is completely unencumbered by responsibility or purpose. They don't even seem too hard-up on the survival front as they are depicted eating rats later in the book. I guess those are in no short supply. But the rest of humanity? They have not seen hide nor hair in what must be decades. The exact time frame since the death of the last human at this point is unknown. Yet if I know Lemire, he's likely got some amazing lore to share about this world. That is to say, if past stories like Descender can be any indicator. </p><p>I am very excited to see where this story was headed. I was reminded of The Wrenchies by Farrel Dalrymple while I read this issue. Simply due to that quiet atmosphere created by the illustration and narration. Or perhaps its the fact that its a story centered on odd children. Hard to say! I tried to keep all spoilers out of this article and will endeavor to do so in the future. More reviews to come. I wish I could assign a numbered rating to comics but that just isn't me. I think if I had to, I would give this issue 3 out of 3 crowns for leaving me enough curiosity to read the next issue. A thoroughly enjoyable introduction to the series. </p><p><br /></p>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-16436192462924975502021-02-01T08:09:00.001-08:002021-02-01T08:09:11.091-08:00Comics I'm Currently Reading Jan 2021<iframe width="480" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/dxsYuDc6gIc" frameborder="0"></iframe>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-46184202672958623462021-01-10T07:31:00.005-08:002021-01-10T07:40:28.319-08:00Livestream! <div id="twitch-embed"></div>

SWEET PAPRIKA can be expected sometime in July and I'm already salivating. These adorable images have been posted all over her instagram and teasing me for at least a year. <p></p><p>With the announcement, Image also stated that Arancia Studio & Grey Ladder Productions are creating an animated project around the series with Emmy Award Winner Director Gabriele Pennacchioli, the directory responsible for <i>Love, Death & Robots</i>.</p><p>Image has described this new series as a "sexy rom-com" and a "Bridgey Jone's Diary meets Sex And The City with a twist of The Devil Wears Prada". This descriptions feels very true to some of the more adorable moments in Andolfo's earlier series UNNATURAL. </p><p>The synopsis from the publisher:</p><p><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 15px;"><i><span style="font-family: times;">Paprika, a young woman of Italian origins living in New York, is a workaholic: success has sucked up her life, making her forget the importance of time for herself and for her loved ones. To bring havoc in her life will be Dill, a naive and handsome boy with an “angelic” otherworldly attitude, who will push the young woman to question herself and help her regain confidence in herself and in men. Their totally opposite characters and lifestyles will give life to fun and irresistible stories, seasoned with a pinch of eroticism.</span></i></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 15px;"><span style="font-family: times;">SWEET PAPRIKA isn't currently ready for pre-order so I regret to inform you that I do not have a diamond code to share but I couldn't be more excited that we'll be seeing this series next year, which is very much around the corner.</span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 15px;"><i><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></i></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 15px;"><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></span></p><p><br /></p>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-86153689270397440462020-11-02T03:23:00.002-08:002020-11-02T03:25:13.141-08:00King of Nowhere #1-5<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguHuk24xyzTJ5TrIhGxgqY-lSZBjCn1R558gEVK71QxJxX_-zrWy9tHzWP4sUqfPND_Cz7kN0gJmm8ZKJxbWfPHV9Io13I0JAqB0sxlvCpx12rvZ3H1OMmzJC6BOtsNp2CTFjH7ufJQsBV/s270/king+of+nowhere.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="270" data-original-width="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguHuk24xyzTJ5TrIhGxgqY-lSZBjCn1R558gEVK71QxJxX_-zrWy9tHzWP4sUqfPND_Cz7kN0gJmm8ZKJxbWfPHV9Io13I0JAqB0sxlvCpx12rvZ3H1OMmzJC6BOtsNp2CTFjH7ufJQsBV/s0/king+of+nowhere.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"><p>The time has come for me to get back into written comic commentary. I've had a little over a month away from all comic reviewing while I focused on twitch gaming but in all that time of course, I have continued to read comics. Recently I was able to finish reading KING OF NOWHERE. So let's talk about it shall we? </p><p>Boom Studios released issue 1 of King of Nowhere in March of this year, at the beginning of the Canadian Covid epidemic. The series survived the first wave of lock downs and comic downsizing and completed it's 5 issue run in September. (Me being a wee bit behind on picking up my comics, I only got to recently read the conclusion.)</p><p>The series was written by Eisner Award Winner W. Maxwell Prince and illustrated by one of my favorite illustrators Tyler Jenkins whom you would most recently remember from his Eisner nominated series GRASS KINGS. If you have been following this blog for any length of time you are likely well acquainted with his work as I've covered most of his projects.</p><p>KING OF NOWHERE follows lost drunkard Denis who winds up in strange small town after a particularly enthusiastic bender. He has no memory of how he got there and begins to question his sanity and sense of reality as he is met with the locals. The town Nowhere is inhabited by fish people, bird people, talking trees and mutants of all shapes. As Denis deals with each one the reader is left to wonder if in fact he is on some terrible drug trip or if the reality of the store has shifted into another world. I could perhaps describe the story as a daydream with a little sprinkling of delirium on top for taste. </p><p>For me, the artwork trumps the story as I am very partial to Jenkin's lovely water color. It feels like a fever dream all on its own. The finer points of the story itself rests in the subtleties. There's a self loathing and wanting need to be better-than in the main characters which gives NOWHERE its charm. There's a taste of the struggling addict in every issue which humanizes the characters, which is kind of hard since some of them look like fish. Yet its these intrinsic faults displayed to the reader which imparts more impact in the story than the overall plot which focuses largely on small town conspiracy and government crime. While those things offer some adventuring, it is the journey Denis experiences in questioning his own reality that really drives the whole story (for me).</p><p>I definitely recommend grabbing this one! If you're unable to make it to your local comic shop, you can grab this series on <a href="https://www.comixology.com/King-of-Nowhere/comics-series/143116">Comixology </a>of ask Santa to get you the trade for Xmas as it comes out Dec 9th! </p><p> </p></blockquote>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-71075439577217236522020-10-29T04:42:00.006-07:002021-03-07T15:32:42.383-08:00FROG QUEEN MINECRAFT SERVER INFO (Last Updated Oct 29th)<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; white-space: pre;">Here is a list of rules and explanations about the rules. NO GRIEFING - This includes but not limited to: hurting someone else’s base even if it’s unclaimed, placing blocks in town or in any built area, attacking people without formally challenging them to a duel (and having them accept the challenge), and of course stealing! BE KIND TO EVERYONE. This also means no stealing even if it is currently unclaimed! Stealing from stores is also grounds for removal from server.</span></p><p><b style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; white-space: pre;">3. Do not build your base or store too close to anyone’s build. Shops and bases that are placed too close to existing buildings will be removed by mods. Build at least 500 blocks away from The Frog Queen's base! Ideally you want to also place your base at least 500 blocks from the shopping district. The Supply Shed is meant for newbies on the server and taking multiple times from it will result in banning. Absolutely no iron or gold farms as that is something that is provided in the Iron Bank. Passive mob farms are fine, such as automatic chicken farms. However, you may not build any afk farms as the server has AFK protection installed and will boot you for AFKing. Good day to you Comic Book Junkies! Today I am delighted to bring you a very special interview with Mr. Peter Milligan author of TOMORROW which debuts at a comic book shop near you literally tomorrow, February 26th. This is a totally new mini series by Peter, with art by Jesus Hervas and James Devlin published by Dark Horse Comics. I think this one is really going to blow you away. Here's your quick and dirty rundown of the plot and then on to the interview!<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
<i>In this shocking new sci-fi horror series, a Russian computer virus has jumped the species barrier and wiped out most of the adult population, leaving the world precariously in the hands of the next generation. In the wake of devastation, musical prodigy Oscar Fuentes is separated from his twin sister Cira. Stranded on opposite sides of the country, they're swept into rapidly evolving networks of teenage gangs. Can Oscar find his way back to Cira . . . or will they be lost to each other forever, in a dangerous makeshift civilization that is mercilessly replacing the past? </i><br />
<br />
<b>The Frog Queen: </b><br />
<br />
So Tomorrow is a rather timely book with the Coronavirus epidemic breaking out. Pandemic stories are kind of the rage right now -- since even before this latest virus. I would like to know what seeded your interest in pandemic stories? <br />
<br />
<b>PETER: </b><br />
<br />
First off, I was obviously writing this story way before the Coronavirus broke. That said, it’s pretty common knowledge that more viruses are going to break out, and there might eventually be one that can’t be controlled, which will spell trouble for us and all out modern science. The truth though is it wasn’t my interest in pandemic stories that brought me to this story. I was more interested in what came AFTER the pandemic. As I say in my introduction to the story, when I first started this story a number of amazing young people were in the news, most notably Malala Yousafzai, Emma Gonzalez, and Greta Thunberg. Especially after the latest high-school shooting in America, there was a sense that if there was any hope it lay with the younger generation. I felt that too, and I suppose the first germ of Tomorrow was a kind of kick back against that feeling. What, I asked myself, if these remarkable young people – most of whom seemed to be young women - were outliers? What if humanity red and tooth and claw can best be seen not in the killing fields of Cambodia but the school playground? How would the kids run things if the teachers were dead and their parents had all been eaten by starving dogs? <br />
<br />
<b>TFQ: </b><br />
<br />
Tomorrow isn't just a pandemic story, it also holds a powerful theme many of us scifi fans are familiar with: man vs technology. Of course, man created technology and therefore creates his own destruction. Are there any particular stories about man vs technology that might have influenced you in writing Tomorrow? <br />
<br />
<b>PETER:</b> <br />
<br />
Tomorrow is really not so much about man vs technology, rather what some technology, certain all-pervasive, ubiquitous technology might help reveal about man. In other words, it’s not so much about Mans Vs technological, more technological aiding and abetting that oldest story: Man vs Man. As for stories that influenced me, when I was formulating this story, and by that I mean honing in on the themes I was interested in, focusing on that thing that made me REALLY want to write this, I thought of it – a bit insanely – as Lord of the Flies meets Planet of the Apes. Tomorrow is not like really either of those stories – there are no desert islands and the only crazy Great Apes are humans - but both stories contain some of the themes I wanted to explore. <br />

<br />
The virus in Tomorrow feels like a warning to all of those who dwell too long in the digital world. I keep feeling like there is so much to read into here. For instance given the media you're in, comics- there's this push into the digital world ALSO for comics. Yet many of us remain attached to paper counterpart. is there anything in this story a secret wish for us all to remain hardcopy readers?<br />
<br />
<b>PETER: </b><br />
<br />
I don’t know about a warning. But I would say that it seems to me that this stuff (the digital, cyber world) is still pretty new and it’s like we’re still trying to decide on the rules of the game. In others words, as usual, technology is running ahead of society. Because of this I do think there are dangers in the digital world, and I’m not just talking about dangers to democracy and personal liberty (which are real enough). I don’t think technology turns us into monsters--but maybe some predilections, some weaknesses might go unrealized and not acted upon without the internet. Its like this technology can tease out that monster that might otherwise have lain dormant. A secret wish for us to remain hardcopy readers? Hah hah, I don’t think so. I think comics look and feel better as hardcopies, but totally see the place for digital.<br />

What was it that led you to making twins your main characters? Do they in fact have a psychic connection? Did you do a lot of research on twins for the creation of Cira and Oscar? <br />
<br />
<b>PETER:</b><br />
<br />
When you’re dealing with big themes – weighty stuff like the nature of humanity –you need characters who’ll dramatize it, through which you can discuss things on a human, relatable level. When the bad shit happens in Tomorrow – and it does, lots of it – I wanted to see how it affected real people. Not just the twins but a father, trying to keep his family together. A few years ago I worked on a screenplay about twins – it came perilously close to getting made, people loved it, I had several meetings with big stars etc etc – but for a whole series of reasons it never got made ( this seems to be quite normal). I did a lot of research about twins for the screenplay, spoke to them, read about them, and I always wanted to write about a couple of twins again. In Tomorrow it’s Oscar and Cira’s emotional closeness I was interested in, the reliance Oscar has on his sister Cira. Oscar finds himself on the other side of the USA from Cira when everything turns to shit - and has an urgent need to be reunited with her; but she is undergoing her own changes and maybe moving away from Oscar emotionally even as he’s getting closer to her geographically. His journey to try to find his sister, and the way they’re both affected by what’s going on, becomes the beating human heart of the story. Do they have a psychic connection? I feel that’s something I’d rather the reader decide for themselves when they read the book.</div>

Here is my most recent comic book review. This covers the first 4 issues of what has now become an ongoing series due to hype and demand. SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN is published by Boom Studios and currently available online or a comic shop near you.The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-29737951839521866912020-01-02T12:23:00.003-08:002020-01-02T12:25:52.474-08:00COMIC BOOK REVIEW : FOLKLORDS (BOOM STUDIOS) <iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/abxi4R80x1Y" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
Hey all! Here's my latest review and if you don't like watching videos, here are my thoughts below:<br />
<br />
It's no secret that I'm a fan of Matt Kindts work. GRASS KINGS and BLACK BADGE being the most recent titles to capture my attention but when I saw the press release for FOLKLORDS I felt that Kindt might have written something especially for me. When I sat down to read it, I found a kindred spirit in the main character, identifying with his sense of adventure and goal oriented mentality! Hey what can I say, I completely feel that pull to get out there and seek new experiences. So before I go on here, this is your spoiler warning which<br />
<br />
Our hero Ansel is growing up in a world where becoming an adult and leaving adolescence behind means completing a quest! This world is steeped in fantasy fairytale lore not unlike Narnia! However Ansel runs into trouble because his chosen quest is basically the worst idea ever. He wants to find the Legendary Folklords. Ansel quickly finds out that this is strictly forbidden. The governing force of his little village known as the Librarians, shut down all chosen quests when Ansel's peer steals his quest idea and proclaims his intentions of finding the Folklords. Every one of Ansels classmates are then assigned new, much easier and approved quests to complete.<br />
<br />
Now there's something special about Ansel that makes this human boy stand out from everyone else. He has these dreams of another place. Another world with moving vehicles of wheels and giant machines that fly in the sky. And everyone sees Ansel as a bit odd. He makes weird contraptions and clothing. Ansel believes finding the Folklords may also answer his questions about his dreams and all the weird contraptions he dreams of and the strange people there in this other world. He is not about to abandon his life's ambition because of the whims of some faceless governing body. He approaches his classmate who stole his quest idea and asks him if he'd like to come along and complete his quest against all known law. That's the entire set up of this story.<br />

</div>We finally got it! The trade for COME INTO ME has finally reached us and I finally got my ending! I felt heavily helped around by this series and not because of the crazy psychological horror moments. This is one of those titles that had a delayed release schedule. Issue 2 landed in May and then we didn't see issue 3 till September. The damn thing slid right by me because Black Mask is horribly inconsistent with their press releases. And I still don't know what the fuck happened to issue 4. <div><br></div><div>This kind of thing really angers me because I'm trying hard to support amazing books but when the release schedule is delayed or non existent, it makes it so hard for fans to give creators the money they deserve. Okay, got that out of my system.<div><br></div><div>COME INTO ME is a psychologocal horror, bodygore, SciFi mashup and it's quite the ride. The writers of comic series THE DREGGS got this series together and I have to say, this is way better than their previous works. The story follows a successful yet insecure scientist Sebastian. He is in the middle of acquiring investors for his device which is designed to allow ones conciseness to be transported into the body of another. The intent is to share experiences but the result is much more personal and invasive. As with all crazy science experiment stories, things go drastically wrong as humanity's abuse of technology (or lack of respect) has Sebastian in quite the bind. However none of it really goes down the way you imagine. <br><div><br></div><div>We're lucky that we are getting a trade and yes, Black Mask Studios is pretty good for putting them out. I think they've released a trade for nearly every series they've published. Anyway I got to read the series as a whole and man, this is the type of book that Cronenberg would make a killer movie out of. Or hey, maybe his son should take a crack at it. The device which connects two people into one brain, has this eXistenz look. It's a tenticle with a sharp on the end. It also kind of reminds me of Hellraiser 2 as well! You know, when the evil doctor becomes a cynobite?! He gets all these tenticles with sharp objects coming out of the ends. Sort of like terrible long tenticle penises. Total freakshow stuff. I love it.</div></div><div><br></div><div>As with any good horror however, the psychological horror endured is far more menacing. The story plays off the humiliation experienced by a lack of privacy, the loss of control over one's body (and life) and the horror of being in a body falling to pieces. Real mortal fears. Yet what really makes COME INTO ME a truly great book is that all the experiences our Sebastian goes through, are essentially amplified challenges faced by people today. We're surrounded by recording devices, our privacy is an illusion. For Sebastian however, his privacy is stolen and body virtually hijacked. His loneliness became his undoing. One moment he's trying to connect with cam girls on the internet and the next he's lost all his privacy and autonomy; his most intimate moments shared with a stranger. </div><div><br></div><div>The reality is that our loneliness often makes us succeptible to the ill intentions of others. Take online communication for instance, just by logging on, putting info about ourselves online, we leave ourselves vulnerable to theft, assault and more. Yet we do so anyway because we crave connection. This story takes things to the next level of vulnerability in the search for a connection to another human being and is brilliant fun. If you're in the mood for something a little out there, into bodygore and emotionally vulnerable characters with bad self image, this is the book for you. I think this is a fanatic book and I really wish they just released a trade and skipped the agonizing serialization. </div></div>The Frog Queenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17411247621070763031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6080918684681161940.post-62204186192042229852019-12-23T13:16:00.000-08:002019-12-23T13:16:44.618-08:00COMIC BOOK REVIEW: Fools Wish by Shawn Kuruneru<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NligLPe0Q5A" width="560"></iframe>
